Innovative Intervention Services Inc. offers various levels of Social Groups for kids, preteens and, coming soon, teenagers. The Social Group sessions focus on the development of social skills and conversation skills, and much more beyond this.
The younger groups are based on the We Thinkers!® program created by Ryan Hendrix, Kari Palmer, Nancy Tarshis, and Michelle Garcia Winner. These groups also include The Zones of Regulation®. (Michelle Garcia Winner is the founder of Social Thinking® with the mission to help people develop their social competencies to better connect with others and live happier, more meaningful lives. To learn more visit www.socialthinking.com. This program, including its teachers or leaders, is not affiliated with, nor has it been reviewed, approved, or endorsed by Michelle Garcia Winner and Think Social Publishing, Inc.)
Our other groups include further programs of Michelle Garcia Winner and her associates including You are a Social Detective® and Superflex®. The preteen group is based on the Children's Friendship Training by Fred Mankel and Robert Myatt. Coming soon is teenager group based on the Peers® program.

Generally speaking, Innovative's Social Groups are good for kids who have some established conversational language (can answer who/
what/where questions, for example), can follow a visual schedule, can turn-take and play board games. Kids with major behavioural concerns are not accepted, as the Groups’ focus is on social skill development.
Families interested in accessing Social Groups will be required to come to the office for an interview. It is important to meet to ensure that the program is appropriate for the child, and to select the appropriate level of group. Interviews are booked on a monthly basis, during daytime hours.

I feel this group has had a positive effect on Jack at school and his relationships with his peers. Jack is content to follow the group plans at school and is typically on his best behaviour even when it is not a preferred activity.

The content the kids learn in social groups (by Michelle Garcia Winner) is great. It teaches kids important concepts and there are key phrases that we can learn as parents ("stuck thinking", "being flexible", "size of the problem") that have become a part of our family vocabulary. We use them almost daily and Isaac responds well because the topic has been thoroughly taught in groups. The bi-weekly parent groups let us learn what the kids are learning and give us opportunities to learn from other parents as they raise kids with various challenges.
